Warranties & Guarantees
Consumer Goods & Services
Buying locally has real value, especially when it comes to warranties. Many Bermuda businesses can offer warranties because they are authorized distributors for the manufacturer or have trained staff who can provide the same after-care service a manufacturer would. A valid warranty is important, it acts as a guarantee of quality and gives you added protection beyond what Bermuda’s consumer protection laws already provide. In many cases, the rights in a warranty offer even stronger protection, as long as you follow the warranty’s terms.
When purchasing a high-cost item, such as appliances, electronics, computers, tools, or vehicles, it is important to consider whether a warranty is included and, if not, whether it is worth purchasing one. Always take the time to read and understand the terms and conditions.
Because warranties can be voided if certain rules are not followed, Consumer Affairs recommends paying attention to the following:
Buying abroad: Some warranties are only valid in the country where the item was purchased. If you buy an item overseas, the warranty may not apply in Bermuda or may require you to return to the country of purchase to make a claim.
Read the fine print: Check what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether it includes parts, labour, or only routine maintenance.
Warranty registration: Ensure the seller completes any registration card or online form. If you sell the item during the warranty period, you may need to update the registration to transfer the coverage.
Supporting documentation: Keep all receipts, manuals, and warranty documents. These are often needed to service the item or make a claim.
Under contract law, warranty terms must be written clearly. If a warranty is confusing or uses unclear language, it may be considered an unfair trade practice and could potentially make the warranty, and even the sale, invalid. If you are unsure about the wording or feel uncomfortable with the terms, Consumer Affairs recommends reconsidering the purchase or choosing another provider.
